How to Prevent Damage to Fragile Items During a Move

How to Protect Fragile Items During a Move

From antique china to televisions and computers, your home has multiple items you want to protect from damage in the event of a move. What’s the best way to ensure your most treasured possessions aren’t damaged or destroyed? Here are a few tips to protect breakables and other fragile items.

Bed and Lamp

Multi-Purpose Packing

The best way to protect your dishes and other small, fragile items is to use something you already own to add protective padding. This includes items like:

  • Bedding + Sheets
  • Towels
  • Blankets
  • Pillowcases
  • Sweaters
  • T-Shirts

Invest in Bubble Wrap

If you’re preparing for a move, you can never have too much bubble wrap. Next to repurposing other movable items, bubble wrap is the cheapest and most affordable way to protect your fragile possessions during a move. You can also invest in styrofoam peanuts or utilize shredded paper to prevent movement between fragiles in boxes and storage containers.

How to Move Antique Furniture

If you’re relying on Uncle Bob to help move that antique armoire to your new place in the back of his F-150, you’re taking a pretty big risk. Protecting each and every side of your valuable furniture pieces is essential while loading, unloading, and arranging your new place. Unless you plan on investing a significant amount of money to bubble wrap all of your furniture, hiring a professional moving company is your best option here. My Town Movers protects our customers by using padded, protective furniture wraps to secure the outside of each and every piece of furniture we move, so you can have peace of mind that your most valuable pieces will reach their destination unharmed.

How to Move Fragile Glassware and Dishes

You can find moving boxes specifically made for glassware and dishes that include dividers and dish sleeves which allow you to easily move your plastic wrapped items. You can also use newspaper, styrofoam plates as dividers, or t-shirts to wrap fragile dishes to prevent damage during a move.

Lamps

How to Pack Lamps

Lamps need to be disassembled in order to prevent damage during a move. Lightbulbs should be taken out and shades taken off to prevent dangerous glass shards from becoming a problem. Use crumpled paper between shades and around the lamp body and put lamp bodies in one box and shades in another.

Vinyl Records

How to Move Vinyl Records

Vinyl records are one of the most difficult items to move due to their extreme sensitivity to light, heat, and moisture. When moving your vinyl record collection, make sure you have an acid-free paper liner and poly sleeve for each individual record. Otherwise your priceless collection could end up warped or damaged on the move.

”

Best moving experience ever! I was beyond happy with the professionalism of the movers who were kind, on time, and took extra care to make sure nothing was damaged. Absolutely nothing was broken, chipped, or damaged on the move, and the fee was more than reasonable for the time spent. This was the best moving experience I've ever had, and I'd recommend them to anyone in the future.
