The land that Oxford now occupies was originally owned by Chickasaw Native Americans. Three men purchased the land from the Chickasaw tribe and established the city, which incorporated in May 1837. The men named the city after Oxford, England, with the hope of the city becoming known as a university town one day. In 1864, Oxford was nearly destroyed by Union troops as part of the American Civil War. Today, Oxford is a thriving university town, just like the founders hoped it would be.
