Where to Find Free Packing Boxes

Packing is undeniably the most arduous task in the moving process. Making sure your belongings are packed carefully takes time, and boxes - lots and lots of boxes. If you aren’t hiring movers to pack and move your home, you will need to gather boxes. The uptick to buying boxes is you can buy boxes that are the same size, which makes packing the moving van or vehicle much easier. The downside is they can be expensive and hard to acquire.

Knowing where and how to get free or inexpensive boxes is key to saving time and money during your move. Here are a few tips for where to look for free packing boxes before your next move:

LIQUOR STORES

The smaller, stronger boxes that wine and liquor bottles are shipped in are perfect for books, dishes, and small breakables. These boxes are much sturdier than typical shipping boxes and hold weight well. Many liquor stores are willing to part with these boxes for free or for a small fee, since it saves them time and money by not having to drive to the recycling station or disassmble them for the garbage can.

RETAIL STORES

Stores that receive shipments of bigger boxes are usually willing to share boxes with you. Larger boxes hold lamps, shades, pillows, and other large or awkward pieces nicely. Check with your local big box store to see if they have any boxes they'd be willing to part with.

GROCERY STORES

Grocery stores receive their produce and eggs in thick-walled boxes that will protect your valuable items quite well. They also often have cut-out handles that make carrying much easier. The next time you visit the grocery store, ask the cashier which days they receive big shipments, and check back in on receiving day, when grocers are more likely to give away empty boxes taking up extra space.

Management may also be willing to set some boxes aside for you. Keep in mind that some stores are not allowed to give away boxes, so calling ahead will save you time in those cases. There is also no guarantee about the quality of these boxes.
