You can’t move without boxes. And, without the right boxes, your move will likely be frustrating, chaotic, and stressful. But, how do you know where to even start? There are so many choices in stores and especially online. That’s why we’re going to help you can determine whether you should do you own packing or hire My Town Movers to do the packing for you.
Using the correct sizes for your items will minimize damages during your move. Knowing which items to put into each box (and how heavy to load the boxes) makes a big difference when packing for a move. Overloading a box can cause the bottom to fall out and damage the contents and your floors. On the contrary, if you pack a box too light, it could get crushed when stacked in the moving truck.
As a general rule of thumb, the heaviest items should go in the smallest boxes. Items should decrease in weight as the box size goes up.
This is the smallest of the standard moving boxes. Generally, smaller and heavier items are packed in this size. For example, this box size is great for packing things like books, CDs and DVDs, kitchen gadgets, canned goods or heavy tools. These boxes can hold up to 65 lbs at most.
This medium sized moving box is great for smaller and heavier items including clothing, pots and pans, electronics, and towels. It’s also an idea size for small kitchen appliances and lamps. For your electronics, consider preparing a parts box.
Medium and large sized moving boxes are usually the most used boxes. The large sized boxes are great for packing bed comforters, pillows, toys, and other large but light items such as non-hanging clothing, larger lamps, lampshades, linens, and non-breakable kitchen goods like Tupperware.
A dishpack or dish moving box is the safest when it comes to strength and durability because it is a double-walled box which provides extra protection. This box works best for breakable items such as fragile kitchenware, crystal, your china, antiques, wine bottles, glasses, etc.
The largest of the standard moving boxes is a wardrobe box. They will either be stand-up or lay-down and are used for local moves, long-distance moves, and international moves. They’re designed to allow for your clothes to remain hanging while in transport during your move. But, they are also a great option for packing and moving drapes and curtains as well as taller items. Another benefit of wardrobe boxes is that you can usually fit other items in the bottom of them while your clothes are hanging in them.
