Frequently Asked Questions

How do I book a move?

My Town Movers has a 4 step plan to get you moved- Get a quote, get packed, get moved, and get your life back to normal. The first step is contacting us to get a quote. Once you approve the quote, we will get your move on our calendar. To get a quote,  you can either call us at (901) 563-3295 or send us a message.

How do I change my address?

You have two options when changing your address after a move. You can either go to your local post office or change your address online. When you go to the post office, request a Mover's Guide packet, and fill out the PS Form 3575. After either putting it in the mail or giving it to an employee, you should receive confirmation in the mail in about five business days. To change your address online, go to USPS.com/move and fill out the form. You will receive an email confirming the change. This is the fastest and easiest way, but there is a $1 charge.

What if your move date changes?

We understand the moving can be crazy and the dates often change. Because of this, we do our best to be as flexible as possible. There are no extra fees to reschedule your move date, as long as we have 72 hours notice.

What is included in a quote?

Each move is different! Because of that, each quote is customized to you. You will know all the rates and fees upfront, so there are no surprises at the end of your move. Most moves are billed hourly, so you only pay for the time you need. If you are going long distance, we will provide you with a flat rate price for the total move.

Do you offer packing options?

Absolutely! We offer packing and moving services, with the goal of getting you into your new home and your life back to normal as quickly as possible.  When you move, you can choose to pack as much or as little as you want. We can personalize your quote to include whatever packing services you need. Call us to get a quote! We also provide packing supplies!

When is the best time to move?

The best time in the day is early morning. Not only is it cooler, especially in the summer months, it gives you the rest of the day to start unpacking. If work allows it, try to move during the week, Monday-Thursday. As most people move on the weekends, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are days that have a very high demand for moving companies. The middle of the month is the best time to move. There is higher demand at the start and end, since leases typically start then, so there is more availability with moving companies mid-month. Most people tend to move sometime between May and September. Kids are out of school, so most people take advantage of that and move in the summer. To avoid this high-demand time, try to time your move to happen in the fall, winter, or early spring.

How long does it take to move?

The exact number of hours it takes to move varies widely, depending on the size of the home you are moving from. Here are some general guidelines of moving times:

  • Studio or 1-bedroom apartment- 2-3 hours
  • 2 bedroom home- 3-5 hours
  • 3-4 bedroom home- up to 7 hours

These numbers can vary on a number of factors, such as if there are flights of stairs, how much furniture you have, number of boxes, if items need to be disassembled and reassembled, etc.

Can I move my pets?

When you move, you absolutely should take your pets with you. However, they can't be moved in a moving truck. Most of the time, pets will travel relatively well in the family car. If you are moving a far distance and driving your pet is not an option, you may want to look into other shipping options.

When should you hire movers?

As early as possible! Ideally, you will schedule your moving company about 2 months before your move. A lot of moving companies get booked several months out, so your best bet is to hire a moving company as soon as you know the date you will be moving.

Do you offer moving insurance?

As a company, My Town Movers carries basic moving coverage of $.60 per pound. This is standard for the moving industry. If you would like additional coverage, you can purchase it through many third-party options. You may also consider checking with your homeowner’s insurance to see if they have a package.

My Town’s coverage is waived on any load-only services, such as PODs or truck loads. Please check the truck, POD, or storage unit for damages before the movers leave the job site.

If something is broken during the move, how long do I have to file an insurance claim?

If something is damaged during the move, My Town promises to resolve the claim in a timely matter according to the contract. The standard time is 30 days to make a claim.

Do I need to empty my drawers?

You do not need to empty drawers if it is only clothes or linens. If you have any change drawers, entertainment center drawers, or such, those do need to be emptied.

Can you disassemble my beds or unhook my appliances?

As a company we carry basic tools to help with this. However, every once in a while a item does require a special tool we do not carry standard. Our guys will disassemble or unhook things for you as a courtesy, but we do not insure their work, as they are not professionally trained.  If there are any wires the need to be unhooked within the item, we will not mess with electronics.

If we hook up your washer, please check the seal before running the first load. Though damage is extremely rare, this is done as a courtesy and we do not insure the hook up or any water damage.

Are there things you cannot move?

Legally, movers cannot move chemicals, explosives, weapons, aerosols, liquids, or live animal or plant material.

My Town Movers is not trained to move items over 500 pounds, hot tubs, swing sets, trampolines, grand or baby grand pianos, or medical equipment. Occasionally a special exception will be made when a waiver is signed by the customer.
