At My Town Movers, we know moving can bring a lot of questions — and we’re here to make sure you have all the answers you need. Whether you’re moving across town or across the state, our goal is to make your experience as smooth and stress-free as possible. Below, you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions we receive about our moving, packing, and storage services. If you don’t see your question here, don’t hesitate to reach out — our team is always happy to help!

Absolutely! In fact, we’ve never stopped giving that discount. And, we’ve decided to increase what we’re offering to customers who are referred to us by local Memphis area realtors. Moving forward, we are offering a discount of 12% and including 20 free boxes to use for their move.

We understand the moving can be crazy and the dates often change. Because of this, we do our best to be as flexible as possible. There are no extra fees to reschedule your move date, as long as we have 72 hours notice.

For a variety of reasons – both legally and internally as a company – our moving crews are not permitted to move or transport chemicals, explosives, weapons, aerosols, liquids, live animals or plants, or materials that are associated with plants.

Specialty items that need to be moved require additional attention and will only be handled on a case by case basis with advance notice. These items include but are not limited to: odd shaped items over 500 pounds, hot tubs, swing sets, trampolines, grand or baby grand pianos, or medical equipment.

Under certain circumstances, exceptions can be made when approved by our team in writing and with a signed customer waiver on file.

Our moving crews carry basic tools to help with this. However, every once in a while a item does require a special tool that we do not carry on our trucks.

Our moving crews will disassemble or unhook things for you as a courtesy. However, we do not guarantee or insure the actual disassembly or disconnection of appliances. So, we strongly suggest that you check the seals, reconnections, assemblies, etc before using these items for the first time following your move.

In addition, our moving crews are not authorized to handle electrical wiring and advanced plumbing outside of unplugging appliances from the wall.

If we hook up your washer, please check the seal before running the first load. Though damage is extremely rare, this is done as a courtesy and we do not insure the hook up or any water damage.

You do not need to empty drawers if it is only clothes or linens. If you have any change drawers, entertainment center drawers, or such, those do need to be emptied.

If something is damaged during the move, My Town promises to resolve the claim in a timely matter according to the contract. The standard time is 30 days to make a claim.

As a company, My Town Movers carries basic moving coverage of $.60 per pound. This is standard for the moving industry. If you would like additional coverage, you can purchase it through many third-party options. You may also consider checking with your homeowner’s insurance to see if they have a package.

My Town’s coverage is waived on any load-only services, such as PODs or truck loads. Please check the truck, POD, or storage unit for damages before the movers leave the job site.

As early as possible! Ideally, you will schedule your move with My Town Movers at least 2 months before your move. It’s not uncommon – during the busy seasons of the year – for us to get booked several months out.  So your safest bet is to reach out and speak with one of our team members as soon as you have a pretty good idea of when you’ll need to move.

When you move, you absolutely should take your pets with you. However, they can’t be moved in a moving truck. Most of the time, pets will travel relatively well in the family car. If you are moving a far distance and driving your pet is not an option, you may want to look into other shipping options.

We’ve covered this in a detailed guide called 5 Tips for Moving With Pets.

The exact number of hours or even days it takes to move can vary a lot. Here’s some of the factor that will play into how long it takes to complete your move:

  • Distance of your move (locally or long-distance)
  • Size of the home or office
  • Are we packing and unpacking
  • Are we loading and unloading
  • Flights of stairs present
  • How much furniture and personal belongings you have
  • Number of boxes needed
  • Quantity of items that need to be taken apart and reassembled
  • Factors such as weather can impact your moving time

Here are some general guidelines of moving times:

  • Studio or 1-bedroom apartment: 2-3 hours
  • 2 bedroom home: 3-5 hours
  • 3-4 bedroom home- up to 8 hours
  • Larger homes or office spaces: 1 or 2 full 8-hour days

Most people, especially families with kids, try to move between the end of May through the first of September. Kids are out of school, so most people take advantage of that and move in the summer. However, for the same reason, this time period is also the busiest time of the year for My Town Movers which means demand is high.

So, if you know you’ll need to move during this busy and the reason for moving is beyond your control, we strongly suggest you reach out to us as soon as your know. Even if it’s months ahead of time. This is best way to guarantee you’ll be able to get the crew you need.

If you don’t have to move during the Summer, try to avoid this high-demand season by planning your move for the Fall, Winter, or even early Spring.

The best time in the day is early morning. Not only is it cooler, especially in the summer months, it gives you the rest of the day to start unpacking. If work allows it, try to move during the week, Monday-Thursday. As most people move on the weekends, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are days that have a very high demand for moving companies.

You have two options when changing your address after a move. You can either go to your local post office or change your address online. When you go to the post office, request a Mover’s Guide packet, and fill out the PS Form 3575. After either putting it in the mail or giving it to an employee, you should receive confirmation in the mail in about five business days. To change your address online, go to USPS.com/move and fill out the form. You will receive an email confirming the change. This is the fastest and easiest way, but there is a $1 charge.
